Pendant la Grande Dépression, dans le Sud profond, Bertha Boxcar est une jeune femme insoumise qui va bientôt former avec son amant syndicaliste, un yankee juif et un Noir un gang de bandits au grand coeur pillant les trains d’une puissante compagnie ferroviaire. Bertha Boxcar, film aux accents libertaires et anticapitalistes, est le premier film "féminin" de Scorsese, qui n’en tournera que peu (à l’exception notable du méconnu et excellent Alice n’est plus ici en 1974).
